Late Medieval Gold illuminated leaf from a manuscript prayer book, the Book of Hours. 16 lines of text on both sides, written in Latin with dark brown ink, in a clear Gothic script on animal vellum. Versal initials are in red. A total of three large two line gold initial on blue and red ground with white tracery, and a number of one line gold initials on blue and red ground with white tracery. (Both sides showing). The bible was owned by the Beauvais family.
Book of Hours are personal prayer books of a devout and status-conscious society: They are not only works of art, but cultural documents of their time. They reveal a unique combination of sacred and secular imagery; made of the finest materials.
