Description / Expertise
Born in London and educated at Repton and Clare College, Cambridge. Ford studied under Alphonse Legros at the Slade and Herkomer at Bushey. He was a friend of Edward Burne-Jones who greatly influenced him in his favoured subject matters taken from legend and folklore. Between 1889 and 1913 he illustrated a series of fairy tale books by Andrew Lang known as "The Blue Fairy Book", "The Red Fairy Book" etc. The success of these books made him a household name. He also provided illustrations for "Punch" and for numerous other books. Ford exhibited at the Royal Academy, Grosvenor Gallery, New Gallery, Fine Art Society and elsewhere and his works are in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum.
